Last year I was up nearly all night with wicked heartburn. I must have taken at least six tums with no relief. Finally, my husband searched on the internet for a cure. He found that simple Baking Soda and water will cure it. This coccotion taste horrible, but it works. Within just a few minutes I was able to sleep.
My husband and I are trying to find ways to save money on the things that we use the most. We descided to start with making our own laundry detergent. The following recipe we found is easy and inexpensive to make. It only costs about $20 to make enough that will last about a year. Everything to make it can be found at almost any grocery store. Here is what is included in it: One 4 oz box of Borax (Detergent Isle) One 4 oz box of Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda (Detergent Isle) Three Bars of Fels - Naptha Soap (Detergent Isle) One 1 lb box of Arm and Hammer Baking Soda (Cooking Isle) Optional 3.5 lb tub of Oxy Clean Optional Laundry Crystal for fragance *As an extra bonus, if you buy two boxes of Arm and Hammer Baking Soda look on the back of the box for a free one year subscription to Better Homes and Gardens Magazine. Expires 5/31/12 In order to mix it together, I got a 5 gallon garbage can and lined it with a large garbage bag. Then I added the borax, super washing soda, baking soda, and the Oxy Clean. Use a cheese grater or food processor to shave the Fel-Naptha soap. Don't worry about ruining the grater. The Fels-Naptha soap will dissolve even in cold water.
Once I was done I used one of the empty box with on of the sides ripped off about half way to make a make shift scoop to mix everything together. That part made my house smell great! At Walmart I found a large glass jar (about the size of a cookie jar) to store it and a little scooper to keep with it (Since it is more powerful then regular laundry detergent you only have to use one table spoon.) . I love the way this looks in my laundry area. Previously my husband and I used Tide Free. We both have sensitive skin and this is very gentle. What I love about this laundry detergent is that it doesn't leave a strong scent on my clothes. They just come out smelling fresh. I'm also hoping that if I leave the top off my storage container that it will double duty as an air freshner. I loved making this so much that I'm thinking about other things I could make for less. Another coccotion I found shows how to make Wen Shampoo. This one costs a bit more to get all the ingredients, but the alternation is a $100 charge every three months. Yikes. I'll let you know how that one goes. Disclaimer - Use at your own risk |
